Implant Candidacy

Sufficient Jawbone Density

Implants must be placed in healthy bone tissue. Patients with significant atrophy may benefit from a bone graft or sinus lift first, while those with mild atrophy may still qualify for All-on-4 without preparatory treatment.

No Unhealthy Habits Like Smoking

Smoking interferes with healing and significantly increases the risk of implant failure. We typically recommend quitting at least several months before the procedure.

Healthy Gums

Healthy gum tissue is essential to long-term implant success. If we identify periodontal disease during your consultation, we will recommend treatment at our Charlotte office before placement.

Good Overall Health

Conditions such as uncontrolled diabetes, autoimmune disorders, and bleeding disorders can affect candidacy. As an experienced dentist in Charlotte, NC, our team reviews your full medical and dental history during your initial consultation so your plan is built around the whole picture.

The Traditional Implant Process

For qualifying patients, our doctors can perform same-day implant placement and restoration. In other situations, the traditional, multi-stage timeline is the more appropriate approach.

Both of our doctors have advanced training in sedation dentistry to keep your experience as comfortable as possible from start to finish.

Traditional Timeline

Both of our doctors have advanced training in sedation dentistry to keep your experience as comfortable as possible from start to finish.

Digital Smile Design

Our team performs all-digital scanning and treatment planning to create a 3D model of your projected smile. Digital Smile Design lets you preview the planned outcome before treatment begins, so you walk into surgery knowing what to expect.

Anesthesia and Sedation

After your initial consultation and any necessary preparatory procedures, we will schedule your surgery at our Charlotte office. Before the procedure, we numb the surgical site with local anesthesia and provide any sedation you have selected to keep you fully comfortable.

Implant Placement

To place each implant, your dentist will make a small incision in your gums and create a precise channel in your jawbone. The titanium post is then inserted into the jaw, and the area is closed with sutures.

Temporary Restoration

In many cases, such as All-on-4, our doctors can attach an abutment and temporary restoration the same day. With traditional implants, your jaw will need a healing period of four to six months before it can support a permanent restoration, and we will fit you with a temporary so you are never without a tooth.

Healing Period

In the months following surgery, your jawbone fuses to each implant in a biological process called osseointegration. The implants effectively replace the missing tooth roots and become permanently embedded in your jaw. Following our post-surgical guidelines closely is the single biggest factor in a successful integration.

Final Restoration

Once healing is complete, your doctor will attach your permanent crown, bridge, or denture to the implants. Each restoration is custom-designed and made from high-quality, tooth-colored porcelain ceramic for a natural, durable finish.

Frequently Asked Questions  About Dental Implants

Does dental implant placement hurt?

No. The surgical site is thoroughly numbed before any treatment begins, and our Charlotte practice also offers sedation options to keep you fully comfortable from start to finish. Most patients describe the procedure itself as far more comfortable than they had imagined.

How long does it take to heal from dental implant surgery?

Healing varies from patient to patient, but a typical timeline runs three to six months for the implants to fuse with the jawbone through osseointegration. Patients receiving traditional implants will then have a second, much shorter recovery period after the abutments are placed.

How long will my restored smile last?

The implants and abutments themselves are made from durable materials such as titanium and zirconia and are designed to last a lifetime with proper care. The restoration on top, whether a crown, bridge, or denture, will gradually wear and may eventually need replacement, but with consistent maintenance most restorations last 15 years or more.
